From weathered building materials to living digital records

Context & challenge

Bath's heritage bridges are a defining feature of the city's landscape and a vital part of its UNESCO World Heritage identity, reflecting centuries of engineering skill and community development along the River Avon. Despite their cultural significance, information about their design, condition and history remains scattered which limits their proactive, evidence-based conservation and long-term management.

What we are doing

ReDiW-Bridge uses advanced terrestrial laser scanning to create accurate, high-detail digital models of a set of heritage bridges across the City of Bath. The resulting digital data is hosted within Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS) repositories, ensuring secure storage, long-term access and future reuse — then integrated into an existing GIS map of Bath's bridges and linked with historical documentation held by the Bath Record Office.

Expected impact

By combining historical evidence with contemporary digital survey data, the project will improve understanding of bridge evolution, condition and vulnerability over time, which may enable earlier identification of risk, more targeted maintenance, and reduced long-term conservation costs. The workflow developed is designed to be transferable to other heritage bridges, extending its value across the wider built-heritage conservation sector.

Digitise

Record heritage bridges in the City of Bath using high-resolution terrestrial laser scanning, producing accurate, detailed digital case studies.

Preserve & Share

Host all generated data within HSDS repositories under FAIR principles ( findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) for future research.

Integrate

Link new digital records with historical maps, drawings and archival material inside a single, accessible GIS platform.

Ahead of the summer scanning campaign, Dr Amanda Ramón Constantí (Polytechnic University of Valencia) visited the University of Bath to plan the 3D data processing workflow with the project team.
